Ask students to sit on the floor in a circle.

In the middle of the circle, place the three types of plastic bags- grocery, clothing bag, rubbish bag and the green environment bag.

Select one student to choose either one of the plastic bags or the green environment bag and ask them to describe how the bag feels, looks like and the use of plastic/ environment bag. Encourage students to talk about the difference between plastic bags and environmental bags.

Ask students what happens after we use plastic bags. Focus Questions:

- What do you do with the plastic bag after you pack the shopping away?

- Where do you put the plastic bag?

- Can we recycle plastic bags? Why or Why not?

- Do you reuse plastic bags like we reuse the environmental bag?

- What are the environmental impacts of plastic bags?

On the Interactive white board, write down students answers.
Students sit on the floor forming a circle.

Students will pass the three plastic and the green environment bags around the circle.

As a class, students will collectively brainstorm and discuss the various ways people use plastic bags and describing how they feel, looks like etc. Possibly discussing the “benefits” of using a plastic and/or environment bag -their practicality. I.e. to carry heavy objects, like milk etc.

Students’ possible answer: I throw it away into the bin, we can pick up rubbish etc.

Students will collectively brainstorm and discuss the impact of plastic bags has on the environment.

Activity1:Discussing the BYOBAGS Commercial.

On the interactive smartboard, show students the South Australia BYOBAGS TV commercial.
Explain to students that this is a South Australia TV commercial.
Ask students to pay close attention to the message/meaning behind the commercial.

Ask students what they thought the commercial was about? Have students discuss the meaning or message of the commercial with the person next to them (think pair share)
Focus Questions:

- How do you know?
Have students write their answers on the interactive whiteboards.
Explain to students that it is a commercial informing residents that there is a ban of plastic bags in Australia.
Explain to students that in South Australia they have banned plastic bags from their state. Inform students that NSW has not banned the use of plastic bags but shops are trying to reduce the use of plastic bags. Ask students: What have you noticed? How are shops trying to reduce the use of plastic bags?

Activity 2: Exploring the Planet Ark Website.

Display the Planet Ark website on the smartboard- Specifically the web page of Planet Ark’s Plastic Bag Reduction Campaign.
Explore and go through the website, showing the class the particular sections their going to look/read in pairs.

Arrange students into pairs, using the 1, 2 strategy and ask them to go to a computer.

Model how to open an internet browser by clicking on the icon. Use the cursor to click on the Url space and type in the Planet Ark website. (http://planetark.org/campaigns/plasticbags.cfm)

Explain to students that specific pairs will look at different sections of the website and write down information.

Whole Class discussion
Have each pair describe the Planet Ark website and explain the information they gained from the website.
Ask students:
- What message/information is the Planet Ark website presenting?
- Is the Planet Ark message/information similar to the BYOBAGS TV commercial?(banning and reducing the use of plastic bags)
Why do you think South Australia has banned plastic bags?
Students watch the BYOBAGS TV commercial and pay closely attention to the message/meaning behind the commercial.

Resources
Explain that students they are going to write a statement/ sentence about the impact plastic bags has on the environment on a post it note.

Have them place their statement/sentence inside the plastic bag at the front of the class.

Select and pick out one post it note from the bag and read it out to the class.

Ask students: Should we ban plastic bags in NSW? Why or Why not?

Remind students that South Australia has banned the use of plastic bags and that in NSW we still use plastic bags. Explain that Planet Ark is trying to persuade (convince) all states and territory in Australia to pan the use of plastic bags.

Explain that students are going to be working in small 'sustainability' groups, to create a multimodal news campaign to convince NSW residents to support a ban on plastic bags as they are having detrimental effect on the natural environment.
Outline to students that the campaign will take form of a video using the Jaycut software, hand-video cameras and Microsoft PowerPoint.
As a class, students will discuss the impact plastic bags has on the environment.
Each student will write down a statement/sentence on a post it note and place it in the plastic bag,

Students will give an answer to the question.

Assessment:
Through observation, the teacher can assess the extent to which students contribute to class discussion on the impacts of plastic bags on the environment.
Specifically teachers will look for:
- Did students comprehend the impact plastic bags has on the natural environment?
- Were students able to work collaboratively in pairs to access information from the website and record this information on the butchers paper?
- Were students able to skim/scan through and evaluate the website to gain and access information?
Did students contribute to class discussion on the impact of plastic bags on the environment?
Special Considerations and contingency plans:
This lesson relies on ICTs such as Interactive smartboard, computers and access to the internet, however if these ICTs are not available teachers should:
- Book and visit the school’s computer lab or library for access to computers and the internet.
- Insufficient computer or Internet access: print out of Planet Ark website with the text clearly displayed for each group/pair.
- No smartboard: record commercial on a DVD and use a TV to shoe commercial.
Catering for students diversity and differences”
- Students will be working in pairs, so any students who require support, such as ESL and students with learning needs, can be paired with students who are able to provide support.
- Write instructions of activities on the board, so students know what should be done.
- Use visual cues and model task
- For students with special and learning needs, ensure that the task is differentiated according -to their ability.
Self-reflection/Evaluation:
To be completed at the end of the lesson.
- Did students achieve the identified HSIE and English outcomes? If not, how could this lesson be modified to allow students to engage with the key concepts on a deeper level?
- Did students demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively with their peers where? If not, why?
- Have students understood the impact of plastic bags on the environment?
- To what extent were students able to explore the impact of and make judgements about plastic bags on the environment using the Planet ark website?
- How effective was the lesson in terms of the understandings students gained towards the environmental issues of plastic bags?
- Were the resources (i.e. Planet Ark Website) used appropriate for the lesson?
- What modifications should be made when teaching this lesson in the future?
